EVALUATION OF TOXIC METALS IN THINNER USED IN POLISHING FURNITURE

ABSTRACT

This research project deals on the evaluation of toxic metals in thinner used in polishing furniture. The heavy metal analysis was carried out using standard analytical method. The result shows that the following heavy metals were present: cadmium (Cd); 0.0325 +0.002mg/l, chromium (Cr); 0.0535  + 0. 002mg/l, cobalt (Co); 0.0085 + 0.001mg/l, nickel (Ni); 0.0015 + 0.001 mg/l, lead (Pb); 0.0255 + 0.006mg/l  and Zinc (Zn); 0.6455 + 0.036mg/l   in the result, only cadmium exceeds it permissible exposure limit (PEL) while others were within the range. Although this sample is good for use in polishing furniture, the manufacturing industry should try to come up with an improve product were cadmium will meet the required PEL standard.

1.0        Introduction

1.1       Background of the Study

The increase demand for wood coatings has been driven by favorable housing markets fueled by low interest rates, the trend toward larger, more expensive homes, and an increase home-owners improving and redecorating their dwellings, inside and out. At the same time, decorating trends that focus on the warmth and beauty of wood in the form of exposed wood floors, walls, and home furniture increase the demand for wood finishes as alternatives to paint (Hillary, 2004).

Many of the products used to coat wood around the home have traditionally contained volatile organic solvents and other toxic chemicals that have been linked to poor indoor air quality and possible health impacts (Wicks et al., 2004).

But because of increasing public awareness of indoor air pollution and chemical toxicity in household and building products, manufacturers of wood coatings are offering many more products that are low in volatile organic compounds (Vermeer, 2015) and formulated without aromatic solvents, heavy metals, or cancer-causing chemicals (Ebel et al., 2002). These products are healthier for the users of these products namely, workers on new home construction projects and do-it-yourself home owners as well as the occupants of buildings where these finishing products (Thinner) have been applied (Wicks et al., 2004).

1.2       Objective of the Study

The main objective of this studies is to evaluate those toxic metals in paint thinner that has been used in polishing furniture at home and other places and to know how it affect our health condition.

1.3       Scope and Limitation

This research work is limited to only Toxic metals in thinner.

1.4 Definition of Terms        

Furniture

Furniture refers to movable objects intended to support various human activities (Gregory et al., 2007) such as seating (eg., Chairs, Stools, Tables and Sofas) and sleeping (e.g beds).

Thinner

Paint thinner is a solvent used to thin oil based paints or clean up after their use. Commercially, solvent labeled "paint thinner are usually mineral spirits having a flash point at about 40°C (104°F) (Hornig et al., 2009).

          The same as some popular brands of charcoal starter.

Solvent

Solvents are defined as chemicals compound that are introduced during manufacture of the paint itself and before packaging, in order to maintain all components of the paint (resin, pigment, additive) in a liquid/Viscous state such as we know it.
