COMPARISM OF NUTRITIONAL VALUES OF TWO VARIETIES OF NUT SEED (PRUNUS DULCIS AND TRECULIA AFRICANA)

ABSTRACT

Studies were conducted on mineral contents of nut seeds Mmansang Mbakara and Ukwa nut (Prunus dulcis and Treculia. Africana) with the sole aim of finding out which of the two types of the nuts has more mineral. The results obtained showed that Mmansang Mbakara contain sodium (42.127±0.551mg/100g), potassium (82.511±1.08mg/100g), calcium (55.73±1.201mg/100g), Magnesium (16.73±0.531mg/100g), Iron (2.011±0.014mg/100g), Zinc (3.927±0.843mg/100g),  phosphorus (23.295±0.647mg/100g), Managanese (6.086±0.494mg/100g), Copper (1.523±1.026mg/100g) while Ukwa nut (Treculia. Africana) sodium (51.84±0.752mg/100g), potassium (62.006±1.059mg/100g), calcium (44.007±0.699mg/100g), Magnesium (11.965±0.495mg/100g), Iron (1.226±0.429mg/100g), Zinc (2.782±6.699mg/100g), Phosphorus (31.66±0.532mg/100g), Manganese (2.346±0.886mg/100g), copper (3.026±0.495mg/100g). A closer look at the results show that Treculia.africana has high concentration in almost all the macro elements sodium, potassium, calcium and phosphorus except in Magnesium show decrease in concentration while Mmansang Mbakara shows moderate amount in concentration. Micro elements such as Iron, Zinc, Copper, Magnesium shows decrease in concentration. The implication of these results was discussed accordingly.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1    Introduction

The use of plants as food as been in existence from time immemorial. Plant have continued to attract attention in the global search for food due to the natural composition which have been reported to be of health benefit. The world Health organization (WHO) have reported that more than 80% of the world population depends on plants for food. Also, many important drugs used in medicine today are directly or derived from plants due to the bioactive components such as the alkaloids, flavonoids, saponis etc.

Almonds nut and T. africananuts are not exception of these great plants which have been of importance to man.

Almonds and other tree nuts have a healthy nutrient profile providing a nutrient-dense source ofprotein, monounsaturated fatty acids, dietary fiber, vitamin E riboflavin and essential minerals in addition to phytosterols and polyphenols (Kendall et al., 2010).

Over the past 50 years, composition studies on almonds cultivated around the world have largely focused on individual nutrients (primarily Lipids or fatty acids) in almonds genotypes (varieties or cultivars and breeding selections) as well as limited studies on genetic and environmental factors influencing composition (Yada et al., 2011).

1.1     Aim and Objectives of the Study

To compare the nutrientional values of two varieties of nut seed (Mmansang Mbakara and Ukwa).

1.2     Scope and Limitation

The study is limited to the study of nutrientional values of two varieties of nut seed (Mmansang Mbakara and Ukwa) which has been kept for weeks constraints on enlarged study is as a result of finance and time.

1.3     Significance of the Study

This work will be useful to researchers as it wells add to already existing knowledge on Mmansang Mbakara and Ukwa seed.

1.4     Definition of Terms

Macro Mineral: These are those minerals that are required in the body in large are electrolytes for they help regulate cellular water balance.

Micro Mineral: These are nutrients needed for life in small quantities. They are also called trace elements.
