PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING OF DRIED LASIANTHERA AFRICANA (EDITAN) LEAVES

ABSTRACT

The phytochemical screening of aqueous leaves extract of lasianthera africana were investigated using standard laboratory procedures. The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of phytochemicals such as alkaloids (+++), saponins (++), flavonoids (+++), tannins (++) and cardiac glycosides (++). However , the alkaloids and flavonoids were abundant while saponinin, tannins and cardiac glycosides were moderate in concentrations. This results suggest that  Laisanthera Africana is most valuable in terms of phytochemicals.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.0     Background of the Study

          Medicinal plants have of age long remedies for human diseases because they contain component of therapeutic (Nostro et al., 2000). Some of them are also used for prophylactic purposes. An increasing interest in herbal remedies has been observed in several parts of Nigeria and many of the herbal remedies have been incorporated into orthodox medical plant practices.

          The disease that have been manage traditionally using medical plant include malaria, epilepsy, infantile convulsion, diarrhea, dysentery, fungal and bacterial infections (SOFOWORA, 1996).

          The plant Lasianthera africanum (Editan) belongs to the order celestrales which comprises thirteen families of tree and shrub with simple leaves. It belongs to the family icancinacea. These kinds of plants and shrubs are of both nutritional and medicinal importance (Sofowora, 1993). Lasianthera africanum is consumed as vegetables in the south-Easern state of Nigeria; it is believed to have cooling effects on the body purifying effects and prevent internal bleeding.

          Lasianthera Africana (Editan), are used by the people of Southern Nigeria for treatment of some ailments and as food. They are respectively called Editan. By the efik and Ibibio people of Nigeria these communities have several generation used these helps for medicinal and nutritional purpose, and the leave of these herbs are used to quench bacterial skin infections, gonorrhea and abdominal disturbance.

          Evidently of course, little studies have been carryout on the phytochemical and nutritional properties of these herbs. However Ebana et al., (1995) studied the nutritional and potential medicinal values of the leaves of Lasianthera Africana (Beauv), and found that the plant contained tannins, anthraquinones, glycosides, reducing compound, and crude aquences and alcoholic extracts of the leaves were found to inhibit a number of test micro-organisms except micrococcus and Brucella arbortus.

          Several other studies have pointed to the fact that, the therapeutic compounds that are pharmacologically active include alkaloids, cyanogenetic glycosides, phylabatanins, polyphenols saponins, anthraquinonesect. And these are known to be present in most medicinal plants (Sofowara, 1984, Madunagu and Ebana, 1991, Itah 1996; Atangwho et al 2009).

          Lasianthera africana is a medicinal plant that has some Bioactive compound like phytochemical in it. Phytochemical are chemical copound that occur naturally in pant. Some are responsible for colour and other organdeptic properties such as deep purple of blue barriers and the small of farlic. Phytochemicals may have caretenoids or flavoniods but are not established as essential nutrient, (Brown and Arthur, 2001)

 

1.2     Aim and Objective

1.2.1  Aim of this work was to determine the phytochemical content  of dried Lasiathera Africana (Editan).

1.2.2  The objectives of this work was to:

1.   To determine the phytochemical (bioactive compound) compare it in Lasiantera

2.   To know whether Lasianthera Africana can be used as a medicinal plant

3.   To also know whether it can be recommend for consumption by our local people

 

1.3     Scope and Limitation

          The design of this research project is to investigate the phytochemical composition of dried Lasianthera Africana due to time, adequate facilities and financial constraint. This research project was limited to analysis of some phytochemicals in Lasianthera Africana.

 

1.4     Definition of Terms

Phytochemical: Phytochemical are chemical compound that occur naturally in plant.

Lasianthera Africana: It is a medicinal plant that has some bioactive compound
