DISTRIBUTION OF BACTERIA IN SOIL IN RELATION TO SOIL DEPTH

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to determine the distribution bacteria in soil related to depth. The soil was dug for 50cm below then a sterile auger was used to collect desired quantity at 0cm (topsoil), 10cm, 30cm and 50cm respectively. Colonies developed on agar were counted after serial dilution of the samples and were cultured. From our results, the 0cm (topsoil) sample showed higher mean aerobic plate count of 6.8x1005 cfu/g. the 10cm sample showed 5.0x105 cfu/g, 30cm showed 5.7x105cfu/g and 50cm showed 4.7x105cfu/g. probable genera isolate includes, Bacillus, Aerococcus and Staphylococcus. The presence of these bacteria as well as their higher plate count can be inferred from the ph.

Chapter one

1.1     INTRODUCTION

Soil is the mixture of minerals, organic matter gasses, liquids, and myriad organisms that together support plant life (Chesworth, 2008).

Soil micro-organisms are very important element of healthy soil. Knowing what microbes in soil eat, the conditions they thrive in and the temperatures they are most active in is important in organic gardening and organic lawn care. From practical standpoint, it boils down to organic matter, but not just any organic matter. Soil micro-organism are responsible for transforming raw elements from one chemical form to another. Important nutrients in the soil released by microbial activity are nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, iron and others. They are also responsible for breaking down soil organic matter into a form useful to plants. This increases soil fertility by making nutrient available and raising CEC levels. It is responsible for the suppression of pathogenic micro-organism that causes diseases the pathogens themselves are part of this group, but are highly outnumbered by beneficial microbes Chesworth, (2008).
