The noise level of some selected areas in Ikot Ekpene metropolis was assessed using the sound level metre. The result shows that the noise level was at 90dB in some areas and the lowest recorded level of 81.5dB in some areas.

1.0     Introduction

1.1    Background of the study

High level of noise has been identified as having serious negative impact on people especially within the source where the noise is generated. The principle aims of measuring noise level is to sustain the actual level which the human ear can tolerate and any noise level above 50dBA is considered as hazard to human health. The movement and communication between people, machine operators and contacts between object create pressure waves in the air which at certain ranges of frequencies can be interpreted by the human ear as sound.

  Sound becomes a noise when it appears unpleasing to the individual exposed to it.

When sounds enter the outer ear it vibrates the ear drum. These vibration passes into the inner ear via tiny bones where eventually delicate nerves cells like blades of grass convert the vibration into massages which are sent to the brains. If people’s ears are exposed to loud noise continually over a period of time, the nerves cell in the inner ear may eventually die and not respond to sound. This condition is called noise induced hearing loss and usually occurs gradually over many years like hearing loss due to aging. This research project seeky to measure the noise level in Ikot Ekpene metropolis.

1.2     Aims and objective of  study.

The aim and objective of this study is to measure the noise level in selected areas in Ikot Ekpene metropolis.

1.3    Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study is designed to access the level of noise generated in some area in Ikot Ekpene metropolis. The period this areas are most noisy during the day.
